Logan

I went to see this last night with my younger cousin. This was our second visit to the cinema together in last 12 months to see an X-Men movie. We left disappointed after Apocalypse.

Logan is much, much better.

This is far from your typical superhero movie. If anything the movie is more like a modern western in tone.

The themes of the movie are a pleasant departure from your standard superhero fayre. Coming to terms with aging, frailty, your legacy and acceptance of your faults are all explored which are not your normal plot points of an X-Men movie.

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are great in their legendary roles of Wolverine and Prof Charles Xavier which they have both portrayed for nearly 20 years. Many of the comedic moments derive from their witty, dry conversations.

The violence is jarring at times. This has an R rating and although there are a few swear words thrown in, it’s the violence that earns it that. It is good to see the result and consequences of the violence as too often in these kind of films, this is glossed over as the number of victims clock up.
This is an adult superhero movie which is as gritty and as realistic as this kind of movie can be.

So should I go see it???

First off, you can go and see this movie if you have never seen an X-Men movie. There is no need to know much of the history going in to enjoy it.
For me, it’s one of the best X-Men movies and easily the best Wolverine standalone movie.

It’s getting rave reviews and although I really enjoyed it, it’s not at the level of my favourite superhero movies like The Dark Knight or Civil War. Maybe with more watching, it may get there as there is a lot to like.

Finally, kudos to my cousin for telling the three girls behind us who would not stop talking during the movie to be quiet. My biggest pet hate at the cinema!!

Look out for the TFIF recommendation tomorrow, it’s a cracker.
